Accoya wood, manufactured by Accsys Technologies, has announced that it is recognized under the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Declare label. Declare, an ingredients label for building products, is a transparency tool to help architects and other specifiers make informed choices regarding sustainable and healthy material use in green buildings.
Accoya wood has achieved the declaration status of Red List Free, deeming its product ingredients are 100 percent disclosed to 100 ppm and do not contain any chemicals on the Red List thereby meeting the LEED v4 Material Ingredient credit, Option 1 reporting requirements.
“Through our voluntary efforts, we are proud to announce this recognition,” says John Alexander, sales director at Accsys Group. “From the beginning, we have been committed to complete transparency and environmental stewardship in the built environment.”
In addition to a Red List Free status, the Accoya wood Declare label shows it is made less than 99.5 percent from FSC certified, renewable Radiata Pine; has a life span of more than 50 years; and proves no limitations for End of Life as it is recyclable and biodegradable/compostable.
The Declare label was created to support the Sustainable Material requirements of the Living Building Challenge, an international Green Building Philosophy that is gaining traction because of its rigor, views and transparency.
Accoya wood is manufactured using Accsys Technologies proprietary acetylation process to create the nontoxic wood product. The modification process chemically alters the free hydroxyls into stable acetyl groups. Acetyl groups are naturally present in all wood species, which means that nothing toxic is added. The altered cell structure of the wood makes it an unrecognizable food source for insects and prevents fungal decay.
Accoya wood boasts a 50-year above ground and 25-year below ground warranty and swelling and shrinkage are reduced by 75 percent or more. The material is sourced from FSC-certified forests and is also Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold and is a healthy materials standard for Google Portico.
Accoya wood is available through a worldwide network of distributors.
