Acoustics become art in the latest launch from Turf Design. The Freeform series fuses art and architecture for sculptural sound-absorption that is the brand’s newest must-have solution for specifiers and commercial spaces. Freeform ceiling baffles feature a distinct, undulating form that is customizable to impart any setting with its own one-of-a-kind visual rhythm. By lending its acoustic expertise to Freeform’s innovative bespoke construction, TURF proves the power of acoustic design to make an impact.
Freeform’s signature, rippling curves are completely customizable and offer myriad execution opportunities—whether the curves are used to add an oscillating artistic impression to the ceiling of a hospitality project, or implemented as a large-scale wayfinding mechanism, bending and curving to show the way through an expansive office. Furthermore, it offers a range of sound absorption, as baffles can be placed closer together for a stronger absorption or further apart to allow more sound to reverberate; but at a minimum, each baffle must be at least 2-inches away from another. In testing, Freeform’s noise reduction coefficient (NRC) ranged from .55 when spaced at 12-inches apart to .95 when spaced at a narrower 6 inches.
Freeform is customizable in depth, length and form to achieve curves ranging from dramatic to subtle. Each baffle can be configured independently of the surrounding baffles, making it essentially a custom solution without additional customization fees. The baffles are 2-inches thick.
Freeform has a 9-millimeter felt structure that is laminated with 3-millimeter felt. Optionally, the 9-millimeter structure can be left exposed on the bottom of the baffle for additional color options. The process used to create TURF’s sustainable, 60 percent pre-consumer PET felt often results in a soft heathered effect with multiple tones present. There are 12 color options available for the 3-millimeter felt, and TURF’s standard and robust offering of 30 colors is available for the 9-millimeter felt.
