The new Trane Series S CenTraVac chiller featuring AdaptiSpeed technology delivers best-in-class efficiency for centrifugal chillers in the 180-390 tonnage range. Designed with replacement and retrofit applications in mind, the chiller features a bolt-together design and smaller footprint for easier installation into tighter spaces. The product also incorporates technological innovations to deliver superior performance, industry-leading reliability and the lowest total cost of ownership.
AdaptiSpeed technology is the integration of the all-new specific speed direct-drive compressor, permanent magnet motor and the exclusive AFD3 Adaptive Frequency Drive. This fusion of technologies delivers unmatched efficiency with some of the lowest sound levels in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry, even at full load. The AFD3 Adaptive Frequency Drive is the first true 24-pulse variable speed drive in the HVAC industry and is capable of reducing harmonic distortion to 5 percent or lower. The rugged AFD3 can also effectively handle electrical dips, surges and imbalances to maintain reliable chiller operation on any utility power source, including renewable power.
The new specific speed compressor also features the industry’s first “mixed-flow” impeller design. Offering the best attributes of radial and axial designs, these impellers—coupled with the specific speed—enable the compressor to deliver better efficiency across a wider operating range. In addition, the “opposing” impeller placement provides a balanced thrust load on the driveline, allowing for smaller bearings and subjecting them to less stress. This design also adds to overall unit reliability, maximizing chiller uptime.
The Trane Series S CenTraVac chiller is designed to fit in more locations with less time spent on installation, addressing a key challenge when installing chillers in existing structures. This chiller can pass through a set of standard 72-by-80-inch double doors. In addition, the bolt-together design allows the chiller to be easily disassembled into its major components (condenser, evaporator, compressor and AFD3 drive) when access is tighter.
