The Retrofit
The LaHaye Ice Center is home to Liberty University’s American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I and II Men’s and Women’s hockey teams and the figure and synchronized skating teams. It also is used by the community for open skating, open hockey and summer camps.
The project began in March 2015 and was slated to be completed in 10 months but was completed in an impressive seven-month condensed schedule.
Renovations expanded the 60,000-square-foot facility by nearly 30,000 feet, allowing for larger tournaments, three times as many spectators, 10 private suites, and standing-room areas in the student sections and the spacious concourse.
The expanded arena officially opened its doors on Oct. 23, 2015, to host the highly anticipated hockey match between the liberty flames and their nationally ranked rival, the Davenport Panthers, in the Blue & Gray Cup Series. The excitement for the grand-reopening of the arena and the return of the home team led to an increase in ticket sales. Many visitors now boast that LaHaye has the best atmosphere for sports in the ACHA.
Liberty University administrators commended all involved meeting an aggressive completion schedule that led to the successful reopening of the arena.
