Commercial Acoustics Wins Award for Developing a Disruptive Technology for Soundproofing

Commercial Acoustics has been awarded the Innovation Challenge for developing a disruptive technology for soundproofing in the apartment and multifamily industry. Over the past six years, the Tampa-based firm has been working with an automotive manufacturer to find recycled polymer-additive composites that can be used to reduce cost and improve soundproofing in apartment walls.

Now used in hospitality and multifamily projects around the country, developers have found it offers cost and schedule savings, while also enhancing the sound ratings (STC) of the wall. Used in tenant demising and corridor wall partitions, the flagship Wall Blokker product replaces additional layers of drywall.

The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) cast a wide net for soundproofing companies, reaching out to over 600 soundproofing firms across the globe. The list was filtered down to 30 qualified applicants, among which Commercial Acoustics stood apart. Due to their blend of acoustical consulting services, and proprietary soundproofing materials, the firm adds value to developers and property owners looking to meet the building code and enhance their resident experience.

“The first NMHC Innovation Challenge was a significant success,” says Karen Hollinger, vice president of Corporate Initiatives at AvalonBay Communities. “This process brought forth new ideas and techniques that will be valuable to the multifamily industry. We look forward to highlighting more insightful, creative solutions in the coming years.”

Walker Peek, CEO of Commercial Acoustics, presented at the conference in front of a packed house of 500 industry thought leaders. He says, “It’s great to see forward thinking ownership groups who understand the importance of addressing this top apartment complaint. Of all the amenities that are offered in today’s multifamily communities, perhaps the most important is privacy and noise control.”

For existing apartments, Commercial Acoustics also manufactures and provides its soundproofing curtain product line, the AcousticCurtain. The AcousticCurtain has been shipped to over 50 countries, and reduces exterior sound transmission by 50 – 70 percent while also being a blackout and thermal insulating product. The selection committee weighted the pre and post-construction solutions offered by Commercial Acoustics and determined that they offered the most disruptive soundproofing technology of 2018.

NMHC OPTECH is dedicated to searching for new systems to enhance the multifamily residential living experience.
