Aerospace supplier Vision Systems has developed Energia using Wysips Glass from Sunpartner Technologies, a specialist in Solar NETs (New Energy Technologies). This dimmable window, developed with Research Frontiers’ SPD technology, uses Wysips Glass to transform the glazing into a transparent photovoltaic panel. The solar energy that is captured is stored in a battery that is integrated into the window, ensuring energy autonomy.
This window is one of many applications for Wysips Glass technology, which can convert any type of window into a transparent solar panel. With Wysips Glass, Sunpartner Technologies seeks to lead the global market for smart windows in transportation and new and existing construction (commercial, public, industrial, residential). This market is expected to increase exponentially, reaching $88 million per year by 2013 and $899 million by 2022, according to the latest report from Navigant Research Institute.
Wysips Glass technology enables any glass surface to harness the power of light and generate its own renewable electricity. This glazing guarantees power for all new window features as well as nearby devices (such as smartphones and tablets). Wysips Glass technology means windows can power a large number of features, such as retractable awnings, sensors, lighting, automatic opening and closing systems, shading, and sun protection—they can now function without connecting to the grid. For the builder, this simplifies installation and repair, while taking advantage of renewable energy.
Wysips Glass offers transparent photovoltaic components with an output of 30 Watt/m² at 60 to 90 percent transparency, depending on the client’s requirements. Its optimal level of transparency preserves the original aesthetics of the glazing and its framing. This smart glazing does away with the hassles, cost, and weight of conventional electrical wiring. The window can be plain or decorative, and can power all the new features desired by building designers, manufacturers, and builders.
Energia is the first Wysips Glass application to reach the market. This dimmable, energy-autonomous aircraft window has been developed jointly with Vision Systems. Wysips Glass components are being developed and manufactured at its pilot production line in Rousset, near the company’s headquarters in Aix-en-Provence (France). This pilot line primarily manufactures Wysips Glass pre-series. Partnerships are currently being negotiated with the construction industry (which must remain confidential for the moment).
