EiKO Ltd., a North American-based manufacturer and distributor of lighting products, has received the 2013 Kansas City Section Illumination Award on behalf of IES (Illuminating Engineering Society North America). EiKO was recognized based on a recent retrofit project done at a nationally recognized architectural firm, Helix Architecture + Design, located in Kansas City.
The IES Illumination Awards program provides a unique opportunity for public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design based upon the individual merit of each entry judged against specific criteria. Implementing sustainability practices, the firm recently remodeled its office to include LED retrofit lamps throughout the office. Officially launched in August 2012 and completed in January 2013, one of the main priorities for all involved was to ensure that the quality of light and dimmability was not comprised, while guaranteeing energy efficiency.
Lighting designer Bruce Yarnell of Yarnell Associates worked closely with Kathy Kelly and Mike Huele of Helix Architecture + Design and Curt Anderson, LC, of EiKO to outline a path of investigation regarding the feasibility of an LED retrofit for the Helix office. The solution came in the form of EiKO’s LitespanLED replacement lamps, 6-watt MR16 and 15-watt PAR30, delivering a seamless transition from the existing incandescent- and halogen-illuminated space.
EiKO will be honored at the Kansas City Section Awards ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Vox Theatre in Kansas City.
