Honeywell has announced that more than 2,000 supermarket installations have been completed with its reduced-global-warming refrigerant Solstice N40 (R-448A).
Supermarkets are an energy-intensive type of commercial building because of large refrigeration systems. On average, refrigeration systems account for about 50 percent or more of total energy use in a supermarket. Since these systems operate 24/7, year-round, identifying ways to improve energy efficiency can result in cost savings.
Honeywell’s Solstice N40 is an energy-efficient replacement for commercial refrigeration applications including supermarket equipment, frozen food cases, cold rooms and blast freezers. Solstice N40 is a hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) blend and has demonstrated 5 to 16 percent lower energy consumption than R-404A in medium-temperature refrigeration applications.
“Supermarkets are converting to lower-GWP refrigerants, not only to achieve global greenhouse gas reduction targets, but also to take advantage of the energy efficiency that the technology offers,” says David Cooper, director, Honeywell Refrigerants. “By choosing Solstice N40, supermarkets are reducing their impact on the environment and at the same time lowering costs.”
Solstice N40 has a GWP of 1273 (IPCC AR5), which is 68 percent lower than R-404A. It is listed by the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program and is certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
In addition to Solstice N40, Honeywell’s family of Solstice-branded products includes stationary, commercial refrigeration and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agents, solvents and propellants; all based on Honeywell’s HFO technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance.
