MATERIALS
SVA Architects created a new color palette for the theater that would blend with the existing public lobby. All 2,000 seats were removed, refurbished and reupholstered to harmonize with the new color scheme. All interior surfaces were refinished, and new wood trim and wall surfaces were added to enhance the durability and maintenance of the facility.
SVA Architects’ team devised a new multicolored lighting system that would provide interest and unlimited lighting options for upcoming productions. Modifications to the lighting included the retrofit of flexible multicolored accent lighting, lighted steps and upgrades to existing lighting to meet current energy standards.
Additionally, the design team was tasked with renovating the behind-the-scenes areas, including the green room and VIP dressing rooms to provide an updated, quality environment for the visiting stars. The team adapted the architecture to meet current ADA standards; installed upgraded fin- ishes, cabinetry and lighting; as well as specified new furnishings. The following is a sampling of materials used in the project:

THE RETROFIT
The Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a major performing-arts venue in Ventura County for live theatrical, concert, dance and comedy performances. The theater, which opened in 1994, required a cosmetic and technical upgrade to meet the increasing technical demands of contemporary performances and to rehabilitate the wear and tear that has occurred over years of constant use.
SVA Architects’ team worked closely with city administrators to transform the look of the theater, focusing on new interior materials and lighting. All upgrades needed to be completed in eight weeks while the theater was closed between productions. The theater reopened in time for its 25th anniversary in October 2019.
