In the recent renovation of the El Paso Cat Adoption Center in Texas, MNK Architects relied heavily on a wire mesh pattern to execute center representatives’ vision and mission of better promoting adoptions. The wire mesh pattern allows passersby to see the activity of the interior—the interactions between cats and potential adoptees—as well as underscores the unique Asian details of the adoption center, which was built in the early 1990s.
Inspired by the building’s original design, MNK Architects’ renovation built on the existing concept, further emphasizing the Asian design details. The wire mesh screen features the notable “Rising Sun” motif, which is symbolic of the rising of various cultures recognized in Asia—and also a nod to the varying breeds at the cat adoption center. Signifying the coming together of these animals from various regions, the “Rising Sun” also highlights the unity of El Paso, which is known as Sun City.
MNK Architects also utilized the wire mesh to provide safety and security for the cats. The mesh is a subdued way to accentuate and elevate the cats on display, provide natural daylight and airflow, and add to the unique Asian architecture of the facility.
