MATERIALS
Attic Armor insulation, which features Gas Filled Panel technology, multiple, honeycombed layers of thin, low-E metalized aluminum, was installed in the building. The baffled polymer chambers are enveloped by a sealed barrier and filled with argon gas, in this project’s case. The product expands to 11/2-inch thick at the jobsite to provide thermal resistance, flammability protection, and properties to contain air or a low-conductivity inert gas.

THE RETROFIT
Thirteen floors of the office building were retrofitted with GFP insulation panels on exterior walls, behind steam radiators and in plenums above drop ceilings. Four to six GFP panels—each with an R-value of 6.4—were installed per section with RBI Shield Facing and insulation anchors added to the existing 2 inches of foil-faced fiberglass. The total assembly provides an R-value of 24.2. The project, which was completed in 2011, meets an objective to make the LEED Gold building even more sustainable.
