Materials
The Xero Flor Green Roof System is an extensive system that utilizes pre-vegetated mat technology engineered in Germany and refined during 40 years of continued research and development. The mats are rolled out like sod on rooftops. They are installed atop three system components, which also are delivered in rolls for ease of installation: a retention fleece, drain mat and root barrier.
Green Roof Manufacturer: Xero Flor America
The Retrofit
Xero Flor America moved its offices in July 2012 to The Republik Building, which happened to need a new roof system. After installing tapered ISO and a new TPO roof membrane over the historic building’s existing roof, the Xero Flor Green Roof System was applied. It features three different plant palettes: the Appalachian Plant Mix, Southern Plant Mix and Mid-Atlantic Plant Mix. Each provides 12 to 15 varieties of plants, primarily different types of sedums, which are known for their hardiness. The plant mixes are grown in northeast Durham County. The green roof system atop The Republik Building is expected to prevent more than 50,000 gallons of storm-water runoff annually.
