Frankfurt Short Bruza Associates specified the Renovate by Berkowitz system to update the 30-story skyscraper by improving the year-round thermal and energy performance of its original windows. In all, 2,808 windows were retrofitted with the Renovate Platinum Plus II system, which adds a factory-made insulating glass unit with two lites of high-performance, low-E glass to the interior surface of the existing single-pane windows.
As configured for SandRidge Tower—the corporate headquarters for SandRidge Energy Inc.—the Renovate Platinum Plus II system features Solarban 60 solar-control glass by PPG and Comfort Select 73 passive low-E glass by AGC Glass Co., as well as the JEB 3SEAL warm-edge spacer and argon gas.

The Retrofit
While real-world data on energy savings is still being gathered, eQUEST energy-modeling software estimates the energy costs for SandRidge Tower will be reduced by 25 percent. Installation of the Renovate by Berkowitz system also helped improve the comfort of employees, reduce street noise and minimize landfill waste. In addition, because the Renovate by Berkowitz system is installed to the interior surface of existing windows, the building remained completely enclosed throughout the retrofit process with little-to-no disruption to tenants.
Recently, the 43-year-old SandRidge Tower earned a coveted second place in USGlass magazine’s 2015 Green Design Awards.
The awards recognize projects completed in the last 12 to 18 months that feature glass as a key element of the building’s energy-efficient design. Nominees included skyscrapers, low-rises, commercial and non-commercial buildings, newly constructed buildings and renovation projects.
