The Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) has announced a new AIA-approved webinar in their TAB Talk series on May 18, where the association will discuss important components to maintaining fire life safety (FLS) systems, which are fire smoke dampers (FSDs), smoke dampers (SDs) and fire dampers (FD) located at duct penetrations through fire rated assemblies such as walls, ceilings, and floors. AHJs have been broadening enforcement efforts to all types of sites, including assisted living and acute care facilities with directions to identify, test, and document the functional operation of these devices.
“Whether you are a TAB, Commissioning, or Professional Service provider for new and or existing buildings, there is a huge need to improve standards for project teams and subs, thorough field testing, and site wide dedicated documentation in regards to fire smoke dampers,” says John Herboth, P.E., CxA, EMP, Senior Commissioning Authority, NorthWest Engineering Service Inc.
“Fire and Life Safety systems safeguard building occupants and require an added layer of attention to detail when testing and/or adjusting,” says Troy Byers, P.E., CxA, Byers, LLP, president of the AABC Commissioning Group (ACG). “Continuing education on the topic is relevant to both testing, adjusting, & balancing (TAB) and commissioning.”
- Discuss changes in enforcement for different types of facilities
- Review typical fire life safety agreement services and periodic requirements. Identify what maybe missing from your maintenance agreements
- Discuss why damper and fire alarm relay devices need to be regularly tested using project examples
- Identify best practices in setup, ongoing maintenance testing, access, and record documentation
