Plazcast SMR reinforced transparent acrylic sheets, designed for use as acoustic barriers in buildings, on road and rail bridges, and at airports, have been launched by Israeli manufacturer Plazit-Polygal.
Plazit-Polygal, a designer and manufacturer of plastic and acrylic sheets, designed the patented, steel reinforced, cast acrylic Plazcast SMR sheets to be transparent, weather resistant and strong enough not to shatter into “slivers” in accidents.
The sheets, which come in a range of colors, are reinforced with both rigid and elastic 2-millimeter stainless steel cables and wires, making them significantly stronger and resistant to impact while preventing shattering. Because the cables do not significantly reduce the transparency of the panels they are suitable for use in buildings, in bridges and in barriers designed to allow visual access.
As stainless steel is used for reinforcement, the strength of the Plazcast SMR sheets does not degrade over time. Ten-year-old sheets will be as strong as new sheets.
The panels, which are manufactured at the Plazit-Polygal facility in Spain, can be machined and shaped by hot bending according to architectural, aesthetic and acoustic needs. They can be easily cleaned and repaired by conventional means.
They can be produced in whatever color is desired and the sheets size and thickness can be tailored as required. Standard sheets are 2050 by 3050 millimeters and thicknesses of 15, 18, 20, 22 and 25 millimeters are available.
