The roofing project centered on building two pollinator-friendly green roofs, utilizing previously unused flat-roof space to retain stormwater and protect the underlying structure from solar radia- tion, which would also moderate the building’s temperature in the summer months.
Recover Green Roofs coordinated all roof elements above Sarnafil’s self-adhered G 410 60-mil membrane installed by Sika Sarnafi’s elite roofing applicator W.S. Aiken. The 1,600-square- foot upper roof—visible from third-floor office windows, the ground level and surrounding buildings—was transformed into a plant palette and home for two types of small tree species.
Building staff now enjoy taking breaks on the second-floor terrace and watching the bees dance around the roof’s new habitat of native flowers. If staff members are patient, they may even catch a glimpse of the roof’s resident praying mantis!
